Spring 2009 Newsletter

The Spiritual Life Center began in July 2006 with a grant from the Diocese of Massachusetts. Our original focus was to serve as a referral service for those looking for spiritual directors in this area, and that is still an important part of what we do.

Over the last 2-½ years, our mission has expanded. We now over a variety of programs intended to help nurture people in their relationship with God. This newsletter lists the events that we have scheduled for the first six months of 2009. They include an Anglican Prayer Bead workshop, a labyrinth walk, a Lenten Quiet Evening, and a Healing workshop.

At the Spiritual Life Center, we try to find a variety of ways to help support people in their life with God. We invite you to join us on this journey.

A Reflection on My Direction
By Betsy McNeil

For the past two years I have been meeting with a very wise and wonderful spiritual advisor. With my spiritual advisor, I have dealt with some of the ups and downs that life has to offer. Recently, I was tossed another curve ball and I stopped to reflect on how spiritual direction has helped me deal with the challenges in my life.

When confronted with a difficult situation, the first thing I ask myself is, “where is God’s presence in this moment and why is this happening?” If I can’t figure out God’s WHY, I step back and remind myself of God’s presence. God holds me, God comforts me, and God tells me to have faith. In my time of need, God is with me. Sometimes, I ask Him to give me what I need and sometimes HE shows me what I need.

Sometimes, God is laughing with me and sometimes God is laughing at me. Other times, He is crying for me and telling me to be strong. Because of spiritual direction I have recognized God’s presence in my life. Of course He was always with me, but I didn’t feel it, or recognize it, as I do now. Before spiritual direction, I faced challenges with only anger, stress and pain. With God involved, although I may still feel anger, stress and pain, I also have hope and faith.

This was a wonderful awakening for me that I wanted to share with others. I know some people have been leery about trying spiritual direction, but the experience has given me more than I ever expected.
