Our Sunday School is comprised of classes for
children age 3 years through High School. (We also have a
separate Cribbery for children under 3
years of age.) Students in 2nd grade and older participate in the
10am church service and
proceed to class following Communion. These classes last until 11:30am.
We've recently started a new program for our
youngest Sunday School students, those in our Pre-K through 1st
Grade class. Read more about Godly Play
below.
There are many volunteer opportunities with
various time commitments. Please feel free to contact Linda Aries or
Joan Tansi, our Sunday School Superintendents for
more information or to volunteer.
GODLY PLAY AT
TRINITY
We have begun an exciting new era in
the religious education of our children with the introduction of
Godly Play to our pre-K through 1st grade class. Godly Play,
developed by Jerome T. Berryman, an educator and Episcopal priest,
is theological education modeled on the principles of the Montessori
method of education. Since its beginnings in the early 1970s it has
spread throughout the world and across Christian denominations. The
curriculum, designed for children from 2 to 12, will be introduced
in the other classes over the next few years.
Godly Play invites children into the
sacred story of God’s relationship with the world and humanity. The
invitation is issued through sacred storytelling shared with a
respectful adult presence and uses creative materials for both
telling and responding to the story. For example, if the story takes
play in the desert, we’ll use our ‘desert box’ to move figures
through the sand as the story progresses. Much of each story asks
questions, many of which start with “I wonder…” Moments of
reflection and sacred silence are integral to the lesson. After the
story children choose art materials that they’d like to work with.
This is their opportunity to work with the story in a different way
before sharing a simple snack at the end of the class. The children
then process into the main church during the offertory to join their
families and the rest of the congregation in the celebration of the
Eucharist.
